Can Glufosinate Ammonium and Glyphosate be mixed? What is the best mixing ratio ?
Glufosinate ammonium and Glyphosate are herbicides that have different modes of action. Due to Glufosinate ammonium is friendliness to the environment and its ability to easily break down in soil, as well as the increasing resistance of weeds to Glyphosate, the use of a mixture of Glufosinate ammonium and Glyphosate is becoming more popular. From a weed control perspective, Glyphosate is a systemic herbicide with slow-acting, broad-spectrum weed-killing properties, while Glufosinate ammonium is a contact herbicide with faster action. Mixing the two herbicides not only increases the speed of weed control, but also improves the effectiveness of weed control and expands the range of weeds that can be controlled. In particular, the mixture has a better effect on weeds that are resistant to Glyphosate, such as quackgrass and small-flowered morning glory.
In terms of cost, Glufosinate ammonium currently costs $27,600 per ton, while Glyphosate costs $7,300 per ton (as of December 2022). Mixing the two herbicides can reduce the cost of herbicide use.
After repeated experiments and tests on the toxicity of the two herbicides at different mixing ratios, it was found that ratios of 3:7 and 2:8 performed well. The ideal range of the mixture was found to be the combination of Glyphosate (8) and Glufosinate ammonium (2) in terms of efficacy and cost efficiency.
Three groups of experiments were then conducted under the same conditions, using the same weeds as a control group. The three herbicides were sprayed on the weeds in the afternoon when the weather was sunny and the temperature was around 17 degrees. The three herbicides were 1200 ga.i/ha of Glyphosate, 980 ga.i/ha of Glufosinate ammonium, and 820 ga.i/ha of a mixture of Glyphosate and Glufosinate ammonium. The comparison showed that the weed control rate after 3 days was 9%, 20%, and 18%, respectively; after 5 days, the weed control rate was 29.6%, 31.2%, and 39.8%, respectively; after 10 days, the weed control rate was 70.2%, 69.8%, and 73.5%, respectively; after 15 days, the weed control rate was 98.7%, 99.6%, and 100%, respectively.
Through observation and data analysis, it was found that the mixture of Glyphosate and Glufosinate ammonium had the best weed control effect and the lowest cost. It was also verified that the best weed control effect can be obtained with a mixing ratio of Glyphosate 8 and Glufosinate ammonium 2(based on net content weight ).
